I would choose the Eee Pad. You can use a docking station with it and transform it to a netbook. Take note that you can do more with a netbook than an iPad.

It don't think that's a good idea. You could fry your USB controller. Besides, USB ports can only supply 5 volts DC and I believe there is a limit on the amount of current drawn of 100mA. Chances are your modem requires 12v and 1000mA power supply.
