Can you do this Chemistry problem?!?

Consider
the
electron
 in
the
H
 atom
“sitting”
 at
a
 distance
1
Å
 from
the nucleus.

Calculate
the
 change
in
potential
 energy
when
this
 electron
is
 moved
radially
 outward
 to
a
 distance
 of
 2
Å.

Comments

  • If the distance is doubled, the force of attraction between proton and electron is cut to 1/4 of the original - this is true of magnetism, gravity, and electrostatic force. That, in turn, would reduce the potential energy of the electron to 1/4 of the original energy. I think.
