Starfox Adventures Memory Card Fail?

So I bought Starfox Adventures today, pre-owned from a game store. The game plays fine but when I select play game on the main menu I get this message:

This is not the memory card with which you began the game. Game cannot be saved.

I can play without saving and the game plays fine. I've searched on google and read the manual but can't find anyway to reset the game so I can save on my memory card. Can anyone help or should i return the game and get my money back?

    either it's broken or it's the company's way of preventing people from buying used games since it's hurt their industry so bad.

    return it.
