help! for algebra problem?

in my question here

12x-31=2x+29

is 31 supposed to swap over to 29 so it will be 60 or the other way around so its 2

  • it cant work the other way around and become 2 it would become -60

    12x-31=2x+29 so you add 31 to both sides of the equation and get 12x=2x+60 then you subtract 2x from both sides so it's 10x=60 then you just divide by 10 and get x=6

    you could do it the other way and subtract 29 from both sides and get 12x-60=2x Then you can subtract 12x from both sides and get -60=-10x so then you just divide both sides by -10 and receive 6=x

    I prefer the first choice since you dont have to divide with negatives

    On your second problem subtract 2 from both sides so you end up with a/11=2

    Now to solve for (a) you need to isolate it so multiply both sides by 11 so you should get a=22

    12x-31=2x+29

    Add 31 to both sides to get 12x-31+31=2x+29+31 = 12x=2x+60 then subtract 2x from both sides and get 12x-2x=2x-2x+60 = 10x=60

    10x=60 so divide both sides by 10 :

    x=6

    The second part is answered incorrectly by 'Mae'.

    If you multiply both sides by 11, you get:

    a+22=44 (and not as mentioned); a=22

    (or)

    first, subtract 2 from both sides, you get:

    a/11=2; multiply 11 on both sides; a=22

  • yeah, thats right. add 31 to both sides. the subtract 2x on both sides, then divide 10 on both sides and get ( X=6 ) as you final answer!
