Is my apartment up to code?

I live in Long Beach, CA. The apartment I just moved into has a gas stove, and no vent. Whenever I cook, I have to turn on all the ceiling fans, open the windows and doors. Am I responsible for this, or is the property management company?

  • All manufacturers recommend a vent that vents out-of-doors for all gas-burning ovens or cooktops. A properly adjusted gas appliance will produce minimal amounts of carbon monoxide. When the oven/burners are left on for a prolonged period, the reburning of the vent gases will produce large amounts of carbon monoxide.

  • I don't think you need a vent for a stove. You may have something wrong with the stove if you smell a lot of gas. Or is the problem just with making smoke cooking things? Could be that the gas just has a lot of sulfur in it too. Maybe call a gas company to look at it to see if it is safe.

  • Why do you have to turn on all the ceiling fans and open all the windows and doors? natural gas and propane emissions are not toxic like gasoline or diesel. how else would propane heaters and lamps be usable. besides, fuel appliances are cleaner overall than electric. look at that 75% electrical loss through transformers and transmission wires from the plant to the home, and all that time and fuel burnt servicing the lines. they still make gas fireplaces and stoves without vents because it is perfectly safe.

  • I live in LB too. Leaking natural gas is hazardous, especially if it builds up and explodes when exposed to a flame.

Buy a gas detector from Safe Home Products to see if there is a leak.
