Car title Transfer (Texas)?

I am a 17 year old living in the state of texas. (just thought I'd state that)

I am planning to buy a car from a private party today (old friend). As I want to transfer the title to my name, I want to know is the household or insurance agency notified? The reason I am asking is because my dad doesnt want me to get the car but my mom does. My dad says I should get a different car. I just want to hide it for a little while. I know this is wrong, but whatever its hard to explain

anyways, When I go to transfer the title to my name, will like the address I put it on be notified or something? like Will our insurance call us and be like "We found a new car is at this address" or something like that? Is there anyway I could hide it?

  • If, you want to legally drive this car you are buying, then you MUST insure this vehicle.

But, age 17, you can put in your name, but either mom or dad has to sign off for you since you are a minor.

Then have either mom or dad call their insurance company, and add this car to their policy. They will need the make/model/year and VIN #.

Since mom is ok, have her do it, and let mom handle dad.

  • You can transfer the title into your name without any problem. However, your biggest issue will be to insure and register the vehicle. Because you are not of legal age you would not be able to do either. So who is going to be the person to insure, and then register, the vehicle? That could be your stumbling block if your dad was the one who was going to take care of that.

  • Bottom line is that the car MUST be insured. It makes no difference how you go about that.

When you title, register and insure it, you *MUST* use YOUR address. Using someone Else's address is fraud and can land you in jail.

  • and considering your not 18 you can,t.
