E34 BMW 7 Series V8 or no?

I know that BMW 7 series are expensive to maintain and that the older they get, they are a little cheaper to service.

What about a 1992 or 1993 BMW 740i?

is V8 a bad idea?

  • the older you go the less parts may seem to be but the outcome is the same with any year 7-series. They'll chop off an arm and a leg just for the parts and the other problem is finding a mechanic that knows what they're doing. When you look at an older car you have to remember the tech working on it is probably close to the same age as the car itself. So to answer your question. Just get a brand new one the first 4 years or 50,000 mi is covered on the maitenance program and if you want to extend it you can get the 6 yr or 100,000mi maintenace pkg. for around $3,200 and they take care of all of you scheduled and unscheduled maintenances until then. and FYI you save close to $18,000 in maintnance in that time period and by the time your done with the car it'll retain a good portion of it's original value. Or you can also get a Certified Pre-owned one and recieve the same Maintenance programs and they start from the time/mileage that you buy the car not from the original owners purchase date/mileage.

  • Be aware that BMW had a problem with the 8 cylinder engines in the 530's, 540's and 740's around this period. BMW had to replace many engines that were coated with nikasil. Please do a search on this term and read up on the possible problems and what cars that it affected.
