algebra problem factoring?

what method do i use to to factor 6x^(2)+x-12 Can I complete the square? If so how.

  • You can complete the squares, but it's better to use factoring decomposition. Completing the squares is very messy since you need to determine the perfect square value for the expression.

    6x² - 8x + 9x - 12 [Split x into two terms w/sum of 1 and product of -72]

    ⇒ 2x(3x - 4) + 3(3x - 4) [Factor like terms]

    ⇒ (3x - 4)(2x + 3) [Group the common factors of 3x - 4 and collect the terms]

    I hope this helps!

  • You have to find two numbers that multiply to be -72 (6x7) and add to be 1. --> -8 and 9

    6x^2 - 8x + 9x - 12

Then factor the right and left half from there.

    2x (3x - 4) + 3 (3x - 4)

    (2x+3) (3x-4)

  • 6x^2+x-12

    (3x-4)(2x+3)

  • (3x-4)(2x+3
