How do I separate my games from steam?

I have steam and usually it works well and I enjoy using it. However, sometimes it does something that really bothers me. I buy hard copies of games in a store and Steam decides that those games belong to it. So when steam is down, because I have trouble connecting to the internet, I can't play my games, even though I didn't buy them from steam. I know that you can use Steam in offline mode, but you have to have steam started in online mode to select that you want to play offline! Is there a way to separate the games i've bought as hard copies from steam? (ex, I bought civ 5 and i want to be able to play it without steam, not even with steam in offline mode). If not, is there a way to start Steam in offline mode without ever having it online?

Thanks!

Thanks!

  • Steam pretty much doesn't want you doing that. You have to break their screwed up terms and conditions to do it, and there's no easy way to do it. You have to crack the game. Cracked versions of games do get distributed, and I think it's ironic that the cracked versions are often less trouble to use and frankly work better without the online nonsense.

  • Unfortunately no there is no LEGAL way of doing what you want to do.

However, Steam doesn't need you to go online first to switch to offline mode. As long as everything is up to date and Steam saves your login credentials. If you launch Steam without an internet connection you get the option to start in offline mode.

I know offline mode does have it's problems though for some people but have a look at this thread which discusses how to make it work for you:
