the best way to keep it soft and not harsh looking is to use a brown eyeshadow with a liner brush instead of a pencil or liquid liner. if you have to use a pencil, make sure to take a q-tip (or your finger) and smudge it so it's not quite so harsh looking. as for liquid liner, there's no way to make that stuff look natural. haha, it's meant to be dramatic.

Apply it close to your lash line and then use a qtip to smudge it out so the line doesnt look so harsh.
