Two-dimensional vector problem?
I'm having some issues with picturing this one, can someone help?
A spider walks from the corner of a piece of paper 5.50 cm at an angle of 22.5° to the long edge of the paper. It then turns and walks 6.25 cm at an angle of 40.0° to the long edge of the paper. The spider's displacement is ____________ from the corner at an angle of ____________ to the long edge of the paper.
Comments
5.5 x cos(22.5) + 6.25 x cos(40) = horizontal displacement = 9.87 cm
5.5 x sin(22.5) + 6.25 x sin(40) = vertical displacement = 6.12 cm
pythagorean theorem to find resultant vector: 9.87^2 + 6.12^2 = c^2
c = 11.61 cm = resultant vector
angle is inverse tangent of (6.12/9.87) = 31.8 degrees
11.61 from the corner at 31.8 degrees to the long edge of the paper.
