Does a car starter screw up cruise control?

I have a 2006 f-150 xlt. I got a car starter installed and my cruise control stopped working. I called installer and they said they have never heard of it and the don't monkey with anything for that. I've tried everything. Fuses, brake lights. Nothing works. Any thoughts

  • That entirely depends on how the setup was wired in. I'm juggling grad school stuff in the other tab, so the cruise control wiring isn't on the top of my mind right now.

I can imagine the installer having to hack into the starting circuitry coming from the steering column and the wiring for the cruise buttons on the steering wheel might get in the way...maybe something got pulled on?

Otherwise, your truck uses electronic throttle and is computer controlled as far as cruise is concerned.

If that fails, a trip to a shop that can pull a diagnostic on the cruise is in store.

  • There is no connection, between the starter and the cruise control. You would have a difficult time proving the connection unless you can show they broke the cruise controls on the steering wheel. Take another look at the fuses. There may be another fuse panel elsewhere on the truck - like on the firewall in the engine compartment. I'm not a Ford expert, but I've seen fuses in other locations besides the fuse panel in the passenger compartment.

  • If your cruise control stopped working at exactly the same time the starter was installed, it would be an amazing coincidence if it weren't caused by the installer. I'm sure they had no intention and didn't know they caused the problem, but they did, apparently.

  • Did it work BEFORE ( and I mean a day before ) they installed the started kit? I wouldn't think it had anything to DO with it. And you better look for any fine print on your contract you signed before they installed the starter. I'd say it quit before but you might wanna ask some mechanics how those guys coulda messed it up. ( Might be a small claims court case here later! )

  • One has nothing to do with the other. Could just be a coincidence.
