Car insurance problem?

Hi, to make things short I just have a question about car insurance.

I got my license and I asked my mom to talk to her company about having me added to her insurance under her name because she refused to let me drive without it. My moms name is under our car and our van. My mom uses the car to go to work and the van for trips with the family. Only my mom and I can drive that lives in my household and the lady said that she wants my mom to take off her name off one of the vehicles so I can pay full price for one vehicle because its the "law". She said that because two people in the household have their license, they must both separably be insured under one car. The thing is, the price was too high so I said that I didnt want to get insured and I wont drive because its winter anyway and I cant afford to pay the price as I am going to university next year and need to save money. Also, my moms name has been under both vehicles for 10 years, so why is she saying that statement now? We were just asking for the price range.

Basically my question is, is it the law that my mom needs to cancel one vehicle and I HAVE to be on it? She said she doesnt believe her when she says she was just "asking".

Tomorrow I will be going in to talk to the lady but I just want to make sure I have my facts straight.

PS. Is it possible for me to ask to talk to head office and complain?

  • It depends on the state you are in.

In most instances the youngest, most inexperienced driver is assigned to the most expensive vehicle to insure.

  • I don't think that the insurance secretary is correct. You will not be the primary driver of either of the cars so you should be added as a part time driver and usually that only affects one of the policies.
