  • I assume your PC is running a version of Windows. Open the network connections within Control Panel. Find the network connection - I assume you have probably found this if you can see that you are sending and receiving packets.

Open the properties for the connection. This should bring up a new window with two tabs if I remember correctly. The tabs should be General and Advanced. On the general tab there should be a list of protocol items associated with the interface. Look for the TCP/IP (version 4) item; highlight it and open its properties. Check that the IP address is set to get the address automatically, and also check that the DNS servers are to be set up automatically. If they are not, note down the settings that are already there and change both to be set up automatically. Click OK to close the window and press OK for any other windows that have opened in getting to the settings.

You may need to reboot the computer after making any changes.

If it still will not work correctly, hold down the Windows key and press 'R'. This should bring up the RUN dialogue box. In the box, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) and press return. This should bring up a command line window. In this window, enter the command 'ipconfig /all' (again without the quotes) and press enter. This should show the addresses currently assigned to the Ethernet adapter. The interesting entries are:

    TCP/IP version 4 IP address

    Gateway address

    Net mask

    DNS address (or addresses)

    DHCP address

Normally, the gateway and DNS addresses should be the address of your router.

If you would like further information, email me with the results of the ipconfig /all command and include the address of your router, and I will see if I can spot anything unusual.
