Placenta Previa?
I was told at my 19 week appointment that I had a low lying placenta. My doctor originally said she would do an ultrasound around 28 weeks to check again. However, at my last appointment she said we are going to wait until 32 weeks. I'm anxious to find out if it has moved. I'm wondering if there are any other signs to tell if it's still low other than the ultrasound? Thanks

Hi, there is no real way to tell if the placenta has moved (even though it doesn't technically "move")other than the ultrasound or the presence of bleeding. I do think however, that you need to ask to have an ultrasound sooner than 32 weeks. I didn't make it that far due to my placenta previa. The good news is most previas resolve by the time of delivery. It's important to get regular ultrasounds to determine the location of the placenta. My circumstances were a little different. I had a complete placenta previa diangosed at 20 weeks. At 28 weeks I had a small bleed (kinda scary) it's where you have a sudden gush of bright red blood but no pain. They put me on bed rest and pelvic rest, no sex and no internal vaginal exams. Unfortunately, I had 2 more bleeds and at 31 weeks I had to have an emergency C-section. My son was born last year at 3lbs and spent 37 days in the NICU. He is a happy healthy one year old now. While most previas do resolve later on in pregnancy some do NOT. I just get angry when I see that doctors minimize the risks and yet I ended up watching my baby fight for his life..I had no idea it could be serious. Wishing you the best of luck.
Take care.
No. The ultrasound is the only way to tell. What kind of previa do you have? Marginal? Or one of the other ones? I had marginal and was informed at 12 weeks. By 16 weeks it had moved. Chances are yours will move. Don't worry about it. But it does suck that you have to wait so long to find out. Is there any way to ask the doc to do it at 28 weeks instead? If it doesn't move you will have to have a c-section and if you know ahead of time, you can better prepare yourself for it.
