DWs answers look right, but I would do a check with substitution on each, just to make sure:
1) 10d + 5n = 10(32) + 5(8) = 320 + 40 = 360 this checks
2) 5n + 25q = 5(8) + 25(4) = 40 + 100 = 140 this checks
I suggest always checking your work, if you have the time!!!!!!!!
"Jeremy has 4 times as many dimes as nickels"
d and n are the number of dimes and nickels, respectively.
d = 4n
"they have a combined value of 360 cents"
10d + 5n = 360
substitution
10(4n) + 5n = 360
45n = 360
n = 8
d = 4n = 32
:::::
"Alexandra has 4 more nickels than quarters"
n = q + 4
"they have a combined value of 140 cents"
5n + 25q = 140
substitution
5(q+4) + 25q = 140
q = 4
n = q + 4 = 8
