How do you factor x ² + 5x + 25/4?

And x ²- 2xy + y²

Please explain how you did it

  • This would factorise into (x+(5/2))^2

    remember (a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab.+ b^2

    LE Grant's answer is right up to the last line.

    It's not (2x + 5)^2 aas that would multiply out to 4x^2 + 20x +25 but note every factor is four times what it should be, therefore you can express it as (1/4)(2x+5)^2.

  • (x - y)^2

    25/4 = (5/2)^2

    5 = 2 * 5/2

    x^2 + 5x + 25/4 = (x + (5/2))^2

    Note: this would usually be in the form (2x + 5)^2
