I think you mean that you're being insured under your mother's policy. Whether or not it has your name, she has to inform the company of others in the family who are insured: especially those under age 25.
The insurance company's name will be submitted to your DMV if you or your mom are pulled over by law enforcement (for any reason) for any infraction or just to ask. It is illegal to drive without insurance.
If you get a speeding ticket or commit any motor vehicle offense, your mother's insurance premium could be increased substantially.
A car insurance policy will normally need you to be named on it as an additional driver. It may be possible sometimes to get an any driver policy. Some any driver policies are only available to people over a certain age. It's not going to be cheap to have a policy with you on it.
I am really only up to date with UK insurance though and your clearly not in the UK as you cant pass your test normally till 17. In the UK it is important that if your named as a secondary driver that the primary driver is the one using the car more. If not then they may refuse to pay out on a claim
If you aren't listed as a driver, you aren't covered, when driving.
Anyone who says "the insurance follows the car" without adding qualifiers, is incorrect. See, about half the policies out there, flat out only cover named drivers. The OTHER half, have exclusions for permissive use, for people who live in the same household, and/or have regular access to your car.
Otherwise, no one would EVER have to list all the drivers with bad records and the young drivers!
If you want you and the car to be covered while you drive, you HAVE to be listed as a driver.
It depends on the state where she keeps the car. In some states, your name needs to be on the insurance even if you do not drive (in some states, everyone with a license in the same "household" as the owner must be on the insurance, whether or not they drive).
From experience, I know it depends on ur policy. My moms policy stated that anyone over 25 could drive her car, so she had to let her agent know that someone under that age would drive. So I would check with ur agent. Better to ask now then to find out after an accident ur not covered. Just let them know how much you plan on driving.
No you can drive but your mom will be responsible if you were to wreck.
