Lucid dreaming or sleep paralysis?

Last night something weird happened. I was in bed, just thinking, when I wasn't aware of it but I couldn't seem to move and it felt like there could be someone just in the room and I wouldn't know or be able to do anything. But during this I wasn't completely conscious?! Like that's all I remember but I remember I was thinking a lot of thoughts. Then I snapped out of it and turned my head and could move and it felt like I'd just woken out of a dream but I hadn't , I'd been awake the whole time.

  • If it were a lucid dream, you would have been able to move your head, and you'd know if there was someone in your room or not. This was sleep paralysis, but a pretty rare case. Let's compare dreaming of lucid dreaming with semi awareness in dreams and what we can put together for your situation.

When you're dreaming of lucid dreaming, you're basically thinking of lucid dreaming but you're not actually doing it. This is very similar to being semi aware in a dream, but not quite as you have a very high chance of becoming lucid. When you're semi aware in a dream, you know what's going to happen next, so it happens but you don't know that it will happen just because you thought about it. In dreams, even a thought can provoke an event, but you don't know about that, so you think you're controlling your dream when you're actually not.

In your case, you were semi aware of a sleep paralysis situation. This is very very rare. Sleep paralysis is a protection mechanism that prevents your physical body from acting out based on what happens in your dream when your brain thinks you're asleep. Sometimes you will wake up during sleep paralysis but your brain won't know about it. Basically, you were paralyzed but you thought it was a dream. Then you knocked yourself out of this semi dream.

  • Sleep paralsis. You just expirenced an extremely rare thing
