If they changed parties because maybe the other party was gaining popularity, then they're questionable.
If suddenly a party becomes extremely popular and you switch to it, your incentive is to switch to it to win an election.
Good question, by the way. I follow US politics a bit, and from what I gather, Ron Paul is very consistent in his views. I don't necessarily agree with him on everything, but he is very honest and you know exactly what you are getting.
Reagan was also a Democrat. They register with the party that will get them more votes. I don't think much about it because party affiliation doesn't mean anything to me.

A next-election loser.
Google Arlen Specter.
People respect a politician who stands by his beliefs,. not one who changes his beliefs depending on which way the political winds are blowing.
I call them Arlen Specters, because the name itself is cool enough to be the name of a robot in a sci-fi movie,
Specter mode, on.
The same thing I think of Bendick Arnold in the revolution war.
Regardless of the direction, why can one not have a change of heart?
I think it's a sign of growing mental instability.
Can't make up their minds! imagine any of them in office????
