Adding straps to a dress?

Hi! On on February 8th is my school's Valentine Dance, and I was originally going to wear a dress I already had, but my dog got it :(

So I found this dress that I AM IN LOVE WITH!

The problem is my school (Catholic school) doesn't allow strapless, and the straps have to be at least 2 inches thick. I was thinking straps like the one on this dress:

Does anyone know places that sell straps? if not how do i make them? I'm not very good with sewing, but I do have a needle and some thread and I know how to get the job done. Thanks :)

  • The first dress probably wouldn't fly with the parochial schools around here... too short. But if you can find some similar fabric, you can make straps. I would get some 2" wide ribbon for a base for the straps (since you don't sew well) and then sew similar chiffon into a tube about 6" in circumference. Sew the tube to the ribbon, with the seam side against the ribbon. Gather the rest of the chiffon into pleasing soft pleats, and tack it down at the shoulder; sew the straps to the dress.

    Use backstitch for all stitching.

  • Check the link for a pretty silver sequin ribbon trim that could be used for straps to the dress. A yard long piece is only $3.98 and it's the right width, too. You could check for similar sequin trims at JoAnn's Fabric or Hancock's Fabric. I've seen them there in the past. Good luck and your dress is gorgeous!! : }
