Math problem?

so i think the answer is $75.50 but why didnt they split up the $5 because they could only have $ .50 left. here is the problem:

A group of students raised money for an art project. They divided the money into three equal parts. One part was used to buy clay, one part was used for paint, and $23.50 of the last part was used for paint brushes. Of the last part, they had $5.00 left. How much money did they raise?

Update:

Answer it please

  • 23.50 + 5.00 = 28.50(3) = $85.50

    the answer is $ 85.50.

    it's as simple as that.

    : )

  • Let x = amount raised for clay

    Let x = amount raised for paint

    $23.50 = amount used for brushes

    Since the money was divided into 3 equal parts, x = third share.

    x - 23.50 = $5

    x = 28.50

    3x = 85.50

    They didn't divide the $5 because $5 was left from the amount that was used to buy brushes when $23..50 of that part was spent on brushes.

  • If they used 23.50 for paint brushes and had 5.00 left, then the third part had a total of 28.50 for the third and each of the parts.

    28.50*3= 85.50

    Good Luck!

  • So each part can be represented by X, since they are all equal. Y is the total money raised. So we have the following equations.

    Y=3X

    X=$23.50+$5.00

    Solve for Y.

    PS, if you are still in grade 5 or less, then add up how much they had for the last part, then multiply by 3 since there were 3 equal parts.

  • $23.50 + $5.00 = $28.50 = 1/3 of the total of $85.50.

  • i got $85.50

    cuz it was three equal parts

    they spent $23.50 with $5.00 left over

    $23.50

    + 5.00

    ------------------

    $28.50

    * 3

    -----------------

    $85.50

    i've double checked it and i got the same answer both times

  • 23.50 + 5.00 = 28.50 x 3 = $ 85.50
