Is the female anopheles mosquito a parasite?

my biology book says, "anopheles mosquito is not a parasite although it needs our blood for reproduction"...can anyone please explain me why?

  • Mosquitoes are not parasites as they do not live on the host continuously.

They take the host's blood as a source of protein for their eggs (which is why only the female mosquito bites) and inadvertently injects saliva. Moves to liver to multiply. Passes into blood. Enter red blood cells where gametes multiply and cause malaria.

However, lice are parasites as they live in your hair. They reproduce and their offspring move onto another host. Lice are continuously living on the host.

    Hope I helped.

  • It is not a parasite because it doesn't "live" on a host. Like we need food and we eat animals (meat) same way the nutrition mode for a anopheles mosquito is human blood. That doesn't mean it is a parasites.

Parasites are organisms that live on or in a host animal.

    Get your biology right :)
