Do I have a "Carolina Dog"?

I rescued my dog "Sonny" almost a year ago and ever since then I've been trying to figure out what kind of dog he is. I was looking at Carolina Dogs aka American Dingo and think theres a possibility he could be one. I would love some help/input on what kind of dog you guys might think he is. Any help would be much appreciated. I'll post some pictures of him below, but he is about 2 years old and 40 pounds. He has very hound like qualities (He's always sniffing around my yard like he's on the search for something.

  • My first question is where are you located. Based on the photos I would honestly say no. While he has certain characteristics that are good (mobile ears, correct coloring) his head is too broad, his eyes too round. Since Carolina Dogs are a descendant of the first dogs originating is Asia, all breeds, in a sense, come from them. Therefore, you can see a resemblance to them in many breeds. Shiba Inu, husky, shepherd and basenji mixes are often confused with them. 40 lbs is also quite small for a male. He looks to me like a bully mix of some type. Handsome boy!

  • I would assume he's part Carolina Dog, but not purebred. His face is fatter than the average Carolina Dog's face. Please do not take this remark as an insult; I'm not trying to say he's fat - I'm trying to say Carolina Dog's faces are skinny and he has a face like a Labrador Retriever.

I would guess he's part Carolina Dog, part Lab, with a touch of the Pit Bull type.

He's very cute and thank you for rescuing!

    Hope I helped! ~ <3

  • Possibly part Carolina Dog. He looks like he might have some Pit in him. Could also have some Red Heeler in him.

  • He looks like one. Ears look right, the slightly curled tail, tawny color, and a feral look. They aren't fully domesticated so if he reminds you of a wild animal at times, that is also a sign he might have some Carolina ancestry.
