Why do Fe3O4 particles provide T2 contrast but MnO particles provide T1 contrast in MRI scans?
I can't work it out, and I cant find any explanation online. Both Fe3+ and Mn2+ have d5 electron arrangements, so why do they have different modes of operation during MRI measurements? Thanks in advance!

I don't know....looks like no-one else here does either. Do check out the basic magnetic properties of the two materials. MnO will be totally non-ferro magnetic while I seem to recall that the mixed oxide of Iron is ferro magnetic..... the Iron ions in that molecule are not all Fe3+ ... they oscillate with the Fe2+ state and will have major magnetic properties.
