How much do Maltese dogs/puppies cost?

I kind of really want one but I'm not sure if I can afford to take care of and raise a dog. What factors do I need to think about before buying? I read a lot of articles online but they don't really cover topics in terms of numbers so I'm not sure. :S

Also, would a Maltese be suitable for someone who works a lot?

Different sources say different things sometimes so I can't be for sure.

Thanks ina dvance! ^_^

  • Pricing for a purebred Maltese from a reputable breeder who has put a lot of time, effort and money into making sure that little bit of fluff you bring home is the best Maltese he can possibly be can vary and is based on many different factors. No, the Maltese is not a cheap pet. Pricing can range from $600 to $5,000.

Pricing is usually based on a number of factors, and will vary between breeders. An average price for a Maltese of solid, championship bloodlines, DNA tested and verified, will probably average around $1,000 - $2,500 from a reputable breeder. The amount of money the breeder spends on stud fees, nutritional supplements, veterinary bills, puppy shots, nursery accommodations, and food (not to mention lost sleep!) also varies by breeder.

My sister in law has one and she needs to be groomed every 6 weeks. Brushed daily. They are also known as barkers.

  • The least of your worries is the initial purchase price. You will be committing yourself for the next 10-15 years. Figure on a minimum $1500. per year for supplies food, vet etc should there be an accident or illness that can jump to $5000.-$10,000. The $1500. does not include grooming which Maltese's need unless you plan to do it yourself. Then there is training, the list goes on. If you work a lot how do you plan to potty train your pup, they need to go out every 2 hours until trained.

  • Teacups are badly bred dogs. Do not buy one. Buy a real maltese or save one.

  • $1,000- $5,000 adopt a small dog
