Removing nails from a desk?

I need to know the easiest way to remove nails from a deck without damaging the boards as much as possible. These are the nails that have ridges in them, so they dont come out as easy as regular nails. Any help would be appreciated.

  • You can use what is called a nail claw. This will allow you to get under the nail and will cause minimal damage. If you take your time the wood will still be in great shape. If you are not strong enough to pull it out after you have gotten under it use a cheater bar. This is where you get a piece of pipe, put the handle of the claw in the pipe and use leverage to do the work. Good Luck.

  • Removing decking nails can be a real problem. They are designed not to come out. One thing I have seen done (if you can access the underside of the deck) is to grind off the head with a small wheel (Dremel) and then knock the boards upward from below. Then you can cut off the shanks of the nails. Good luck.
