Do you ever feel hopelessly inadequate?

I was just watching an interview with the actor Kevin Spacey, after watching him in the film American Beauty (What an incredible film by the way, I can't express how much I like it).

Anyway, I just got this feeling from watching him that he is just such a presence. He is very articulate, very smart, and just the sort of guy you can count on. A proper human being, with achievements, ambitions, and an overall great personality.

Then I think about putting myself in his shoes, and I realise, I could never fill them. I am genuinely boring and incapable in comparison. I can't hold a conversation like him, I am not as smart or on the ball, I haven't achieved anywhere near as much as he has. It's just really depressing. I feel totally inadequate, it's like I am a half-baked human being. I'm also a pleasure seeker, I am in the mode at the moment where I would gladly just lie in bed masturbating all day and eating cookies rather than do anything in life. Perhaps this is a symptom of something? Sorry to give a crude analogy.

Does anyone else feel like this sometimes, as though they are not worthy of any attention?

  • Yes I do. Everyday I feel completely inadequate, inferior and pretty much worthless. It's not a good feeling. We are the only ones who can change it though.

  • Sounds like you have an inferiority complex just like I do. You have to remind yourself that you are unique. Only you are you. not everyone is going to be a movie star. It takes a lot of energy just to get up everyday and get through this thing called life. But when you feel inadequate to someone figure out what it is you want to change about yourself to make you more like the person you feel inadequate to and work on changing it.
