  • Alright. They'll probably just look at your teeth or take X-rays at first.

If deemed you need braces, depending on your situation, you might have to have spacers, which are just little rubber bands between your teeth to move them apart. These cause a small bit of soreness but nothing too terrible. You can have the spacers anywhere from weeks to months, but I'm not sure, I've never had them. Now the actual braces, that's another story.

First you'll get impressions, which is just where they make you bite down on mouth fulls of gooey stuff, but it makes you gag like crazy.

Then, they'll probably take pictures of your teeth, using these clear hook-type things to stretch your mouth out. This doesn't hurt, but you look like a freak and if anyone looks at you it's really embarrassing.

After that, they'll clean your teeth, which obviously doesn't hurt.

Next they will glue the brackets onto your teeth, which also doesn't hurt but the glue taste is nasty.

Then they'll slide in the wires. You'll feel a bit of pressure and tightness in your teeth, but you'll get used to it.

That's pretty much the whole thing. The procedure itself doesn't hurt and can take anywhere up to two hours. About an hour or so after you get home, your teeth and mouth will become VERY very sore. You might also have drooling problems and trouble speaking until your mouth gets used to the braces. The soreness will last for about two weeks. Soft foods like soups, mashed potatoes, yogurt and such will be your best friends for a while. Eventually you will be able to eat normally again. That is, until your first month is up, and you get them tightened again. You might only be sore for a week this time, and the days will slowly dwindle down as you get them tightened each month until you are only sore for a day or so, then it's back to normal. Well, as normal as braces can be. They will definitely irritate the inside of your mouth until you learn to talk around them though. Of course, the orthodontist will give you wax for this, along with other helpful things. Since you only need your bottom teeth fixed, you won't have to have rubber bands, which is good. Hopefully, you won't need headgear, I haven't yet, so I'm just thankful so far. You might keep the braces on for anywhere from a year to two and a half years. Spring break marks my first year mark with braces and I've come to learn, they're not so bad. Sure flossing is hell and I can't whistle, but I get over it. I guess all I can say is, get through the first two months and you'll be fine. Hope I helped some. :)

  • Oooh, I used to love these questions.

So, have you made the molds and stuff? If you're sure you're getting the braces ON then here goes-

    So, no.

You sit in the chair. They are basically attaching the back brackets I think. The will put on each individual bracket. It doesn't really hurt. You will have to sit with your mouth open like that to let the brackets sort of stick or something, for a while. It's not that bad. Then, they'll feed a wire through the brackets. They clip the ends carefully but don't hesitate to tell them if it pokes you. Then, they'll have you pick a color, probably, for the rubber bands. It might tug on your teeth while they put the rubber bands on the brackets, but it shouldn't cause you much pain. I got my braces on without ever having a single complaint, though I did feel pain, it was never too bad. You could also take like child's ibuprofen before you go-can't hurt.

The pain starts after your braces are on. Think about it. You have aluminum cemented to your teeth, with rubber bands tight on the brackets and a wire pulling your teeth apart to make them sit correctly. Eventually, you'll get over it. You might not want to punch yourself in the jaw or devour an apple for a little while, but you'll be all right. You can still take ibuprofen if the pain is bad.

People make a really big deal out of braces, but I bet your orthodontist took it very serenely, maybe even bored? Because, it's nothing. I have braces on my bottom and top teeth and despite the soreness when I first got home, after that first week they never bothered me again.

    Good luck!

LOL, Southern Belle is either a baby or she's making stuff up. Feel free to email me at [email protected] (the only one I check)

That other answerer has a point -- it will hurt to brush your teeth. Perhaps I was a little dismissive. EVERYTHING HURTS! You can't lay with the back of your head on the pillow because no pressure on the teeth makes them ache like he11, but any pressure will cause you endless pain! You will regret every move of your jaw you make! But you'll get through it and if you worry about it now you'll just screw up now! Your braces will feel SO weird at first but soon you'll be like me!

  • It's been so long since I've had them, I don't' know step-by-step what will happen. I had a completely unsympathetic orthodontist, so all I remember is pain. Lots of pain! I'm sorry, but you asked.

They will glue metal pieces to each tooth, and thread a thin wire through them. The wire is tightened every so often. When it is tightened, your teeth move. That's the point. But it hurts like hell. Depending on your pain threshold, it can bring tears to your eyes. It hurts to eat and brush your teeth for a few days after a tightening, so stock up on mashed potatoes, and mac-n-cheese.

Good luck! I hope you don't need head gear. That's a whole nother story, right there!

  • hi

the first visit they take xrays and models of your teeth, you will need another appointment in a week, they will have a treatment plan organized and costs, and will tell you how things will happen and the time it will take, when you get them fitted it does not hurt, but other follow up appointments it does, as the teeth are starting to move, the pain can be bearable by taking panadol, just remember the end result will be great. Good luck

  • We don't all have identical mouths with identical braces, this is why you go to the dentist ! EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT! Although I don't blame you for asking!

I have had braces for 1 year and will need to have them fir another year, then chafe the type of brace and have them for2 years and then have a retainer for3 years!

    7Years!!!!!

    Consider yourself lucky

They don't Hirt that much only a bit when they go in

Sorry, I know that sounds a bit intimidating

It sounded nicer in my mind

    I don't mean it rudely

  • well i had them, when the were tightened they hurt couldn't really chew nothing took a lot of getting used to i found cant really remember them that well seemed long ago, soup and all soft foods that i couldn't choke on lol, but don't worry i got used to it im sure you will and at the end its all worth it nice straight teeth :D

  • Um yeah no ****...your teeth are going to be moving. The amount of time you are going to be having them on depends on how ****** up your teeth are.
