Why is minecaft so popular?

I hear so many people talk about minecraft

i have seen screen shots of it and the graphics looks like it was made in the 80s

(yes i know graphics isn't always the only thing about a game there is always gameplay or storyline)

so what is it that makes it so popular????

    MC is a great example of how terrible graphics can make a great game. If you can bypass the graphics then the game is outstanding.

    80s? HA! 3d wasn't even polygon styled(let alone created) until '92! Anyway, the 3 above help.
