ME2 (personally) was easier to play through. The graphics are much better, the soundtrack as well (in me own opinion mind.) But, for the coherency of it all i'd buy mass effect one, just for the scale and scope of the game especially when you encounter Sovereign, and its one 'edge' mass effect one has over its sequel, is the bad guy and the missions.
The decisions, actions, and plot states you created in Mass Effect 1 will persist in Mass Effect 2. Additionally other factors such as your character level will grant you certain bonuses as well.

Get ME1 first because ME2 lets you import save data from ME1.
