How to do percentages backwards?
So if someone made $101,138 dollars a year then the got an X percent raise so then the next year they made 105,183.52. How do you find the raise percentage? I know the difference is $4,045.52 but I'm not sure what to do next. Please help?

So if someone made $101,138 dollars a year then the got an
X percent raise so then the next year they made 105,183.52.
How do you find the raise percentage?
I know the difference is $4,045.52 but I'm not sure what to do next.
A raise of $4,045.52 from $101,138 multiplied by 100 gives the value of X
X = 4
Taking 101,138 as reference, divide the difference between the new salary and the old salary by the reference. Result is 0.04. Multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage: 0.04 x 100 = 4%.
Since I could never remember the exact formulas I do it this way. x/100 the price of the boat = 540/6 the tax. Then you solve for x: $540 x 100 /6 and you get the price of the boat which is $9,000. It works for anything. Just put the the unknown on top of the fraction. For example what would a 25% discount be for something that costs $234. 234/100=x/25. Solve for x 234x25/100=58.50 It's the only way I can remember what to put where.
Difference in salary divided by the original salary multiplied by 100% and you get the raise in percent.
divide 105183.52 by 101138= 1.04
so there is a 4% increase
101138 + 101138x = 105183.52
101138x = 105183.52 - 101138
101138x = 4045.52
x = 4045.52 / 101138
x = .04
4%
(1 + X) = 105183.52/101138 = 1.04...........x = 0.04 = 4%
