How do I back up important data from my computer onto a cd or dvd?

My computer came with a DVD Rom drive and a and a DVD R/RW drive but when I put a blank disk in, it doesn't recognize it. I have tried CD-RW, DVD+R, CD-R, and DVD +R DL and nothing seems to work..HELP!

  • YOU MIGHT TRY THIS , REINSTALL THE BURNER SOFTWARE

  • Some DVD R/RW sometimes simply means that the drive can read those types of DVDs, and not necessarily burn them. What software are you using, in Windows XP (and therefore I'd assume also in Vista) there is software that comes with the operating system that lets you burn cds and dvds. If you don't have autorun enabled you would have to open My Computer, click the drive that the blank cd is in, and after dragging and dropping files into that folder select the Burn these items to cd/dvd from the menu on the left. If you aren't running XP or Vista you are going to need some burning software, Nero is excellent but not free (there might be a trial I'm unsure) but if you search google for the desired type of burning software (Ex. "free cd-r burning software") I'm sure you'll find what you need.
