Graphic design as a career?

I'm thinking about graphic design as a career (maybe something like logo creation, book illusion, stuff like that. Or I'd be happy with simple editing and touching up)

What is the best way to go about getting a job as a graphic designer, what to expect, salary in average. I'm in my second semester of freshman year at college getting my associates in social science (hate it) is it too late, best colleges in northern California for graphic design.

Any help would be awesome, but I'd prefer a real graphic designers input
