Ballet dancer does contemporary!?

I have a contemporary duet I’m doing and I’m really nervous about it...My teacher always tell me to loosen up and relax...she says I look too “ballet”...there’s some pretty weird steps in the dance that I feel awkward doing...any advice?

  • It’s not so much loosening up and relaxing as it is changing your sense of gravity. In ballet you want to float. In modern and contemporary you feel the gravity and pull of the floor. You still need a strong solid attack just like you do in ballet. However the emphases is less on grace and more on commitment to the movement.

Most of today’s professional ballet companies also have contemporary pieces in their repertoire. Contemporary and modern are both genres that require ballet training too. The transition from one to the other is primarily where your body gravity is focused.
