First of all you need to crop the image to an exact square - or you will squish and distort the image when you resize.
Select the crop tool in GIMP, in the tool options select the Fixed: aspect ratio option. In the box underneath type 1:1 then click and drag to crop the image to a square. Press enter when you are happy with the crop.
Then click Image > Scale Image, set the height and width to 50px, hit Scale.
If you are not bothered about the slight distortion, then don't crop, but then when you Scale the image click on the chain link icon to remove the aspect ratio lock before you type in the new width and height.
