does a hysterosalpingogram hurt?
does it hurt and if you have a hsg, i heard that it can also make and opening if the tube is blocked? so if the tube is blocked and you have a hsg...will you need more treatment or will that be enough for you to get pregnant?
also how much does it cost?

hi
i jst got back from the hospital about an hour ago after going for this proceedure,i will tell you the honest truth, its more embarrasing than painfull. You get changed into a gown and you are told to lye on the x-ray table, you will have a speculum inserted and then followed by a cathter which injects dye into your uterus, you get little pressure and a small cramp like a period pain,as the doctor is blowing up the balloon you will get some more cramps, but they are very bearable, then you can watch the dye as it goes around your tubes and flushes out into your uterus,
please dont worry as i dont think it hurt as much as what people say.
just relax.
and good luck.
Our insurance paid - since it was diagnosing and not treating infertility (I think aroudn $800 though). Some doctors will give you pain meds, antiboitics, or suggest you take advil before the procedure. They also told me it could clean out your tubes and make you more likely to get pregnant - that didn't happen. The actual procedure didn't hurt that bad, but what was incredibly painful was the 1-2 hours after that where at parts it was worse than contractions (at least for me). In addition, I got a UTI and was in the emergency room the next day getting antibiotics.
Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't do it again - my tubes are fine, it hurt lots, and 3 years later, we still have no idea why we haven't had a sucessful pregnancy. If you do have it - I would ask for the pain killers (or take the advil at least an hour before going in) and also ask for antibiotics so you can start taking those immediately. Good luck!
Hi,
I'm in CA and my HSG cost $1000, but insurance covered it, though I don't know why. My insurance only covers 50% of fertility diagnotics and 0% on treatment, so I was shocked when it was covered. It must have been coded differently or something.
According to my doc, sometimes it clears blockages/congestion and sometimes it doesn't. It depends on how severe it is.
For some women it really hurts and for some it's no big deal. For me it was bad. For my cousin it was a piece of cake. You just never know until it happens. But the bottom line is that it's a necessary diagnostic tool. If that pain helps me get pregnant, it was worth it
Good luck!!!
you're no longer given any anesthetic till now, yet maximum physicians recommend taking ibuprofen in simple terms before the proceedure. as quickly as I had mine I had an old-college record and he used a clamp on my cervix instead of a foley catheter...it fairly replaced into uncomfortable, yet maximum medical doctors use the different technique. good success!
