Do US Marines do air assaults?

Like with helicopters? or is that just only the army's 101st airborne

  • They do use helicopters, however they are not trained in air assaults. Some specialized units are, just not the Marine Corp as a whole.

  • Helicopter operations are a big part of the Marine doctrine. Helicopters are one of the best and most flexible ways to move a light Infantry force (such as the Marines)

    To that extent, "yes".

However, they don't really do brigade level combined arms Air Assaults like the 101st is capable (not that I'm aware of anyway).

  • USMC invented air assault.

In the later stages of the Korean War the USMC did what they called 'vertical envelopment'.

The used helicopters in mass to come down on the enemy.

Sure sounds like air assault to me......

  • Marines carry out operations in the air, on land, and in the sea. So yes, they do.

  • They'll jump out of one, sure. I've done it!!!!, but as far as rappelling like the 101st? No!!!! At least not just the regular grunt anyways!!!!

  • No, they have to walk everywhere or get a ride from the Navy.
