Wanting to upgrade car audio system, How?

I do a lot of tech stuff like building computers from scratch or opening computers and fixing them. I also fix minor car mechanical problems and simple head unit/stereo installations and wiring. But I TOTALLY have NO idea about Car Audio Amplifiers and Subwoofers.

First of all, my current system:

Pioneer DEH-6300UB Head Unit

4 x 50W MOSFET amplifier with two 2V RCA preamp outputs for system expansion

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004CLYOG4/ref=oh...

Sony Xplod XS-R1344 5-1/4" 4-Way Speakers (Front)

Impedance: 4 ohms

Power Handling Capacity: 160W

Sony Xplod XS-R6944 6" x 9" 4-Way Speakers (Rear)

Impedance: 4 ohms

Power Handling Capacity: 300W

The sound is good but I wouldn't say great at higher volumes. My aim is just to get the most absolute best quality sound from my system. I like to play cool jazz/pop/RnB/techno stuff and I don't really play at very loud volumes but I just want the best sound quality.

I'd like to understand how is the correct way of matching amplifers, subwoofers, & speakers

1. Do I need to replace my HU or my speakers? Are they bad?

2. Will l need a subwoofer aside from the amplifier?

3. Are my speakers really 300w and 160w EACH speaker? or 150w and 80w for each? with four speakers 2x150w and 2x80w?

4. I know these are peak power but if it is 300w+160w = then does that mean I need an amplifier with more than 460w?

5. My speakers use 4 Ohms then can I only get 4 Ohms amps? is using 2 Ohms amp bad?

6. If I need to get a subwoofer do I need a separate amp or just connect all 4 speakers+subwoofer on 1 amp is that possible? If so, what wattage range should I look for?

7. Do my speakers really need an amp? and should I just get a subwoofer with dedicated amp?

I'm sorry I have A LOT of questions but I'm really confused @_@ please help!

(At the very least, I don't need to post those 7 questions separately :D)

  • 1.) a headunit can make a noticable differance in sound quality and when they start to sound bad at higher volumes that is known as "distortion" adding an amplifier would help with that if properly tuned)

2.) Subwoofers MUST be powered by an ampifier. the amplifier you will want for subwoofers is known as a "Class D amp" or "Class D monoblock" . these amps are designed for low frequencies (BASS!!!)

3.) Dont pay attention to MAX wattage look for RMS or Nominal wattage.

4.) NO , infact you will want probably a 200-300 watt amp. (you will want 2 amps one for the sub woofer (the class D amp) and for the speakers (mids and highs) you will want at least a 2 channel amp, 4 channel would be ideal)

5.) you can use any amp just make sure the amp can handle the impedance...many amps say "2 ohm stable" or 1 Ohm stable meaning.....anything BELOW 1 ohm or 2 ohms will damage the amp but 4 ohms would be fine.

6.) yep 2 amps :) CLASS D (MONOBLOCK) for subwoofer.

and 4 channel amplifier for other speakers)

7.) Subwoofers = YES! (will not work properly otherwise.)

Other speakers , no but it will make the sound more crisp and loud , and not drain out when the bass notes hit .

    -hope this helped a little.

  • I would love to answer ur question however want more info. Do you want the deck speakers subs amps all of it or just a partial approach? And whats do u do not forget an affordable quantity you want to spend on it?
