Atheists, how do you resolve existential crises?

Usually, people look towards a truth or path that is higher than what science teaches to help resolve difficulties. Since you do not have belief in anything like that, how do you resolve yourself when your life comes crashing down?

I'm really just curious, I'm not trying to degrade anyone here.

  • By picking up the pieces and not deluding myself with the idea that horrible, life-shattering things are "part of God's plan." I don't whine, I don't complain, I don't lie to myself and tell myself it's all gonna work out in the end. I handle my problems by taking whatever actions is necessary.

Religion is worthless horseshit. It does nothing to help anybody except shielding them from reality, which only serves to leave them MORE vulnerable when the bottom really DOES fall out!

When your house gets destroyed by a hurricane, when you lose your job, when you go broke, when your spouse of several decades dies, when your children die, when your parents die..... God isn't there holding your hand.

So let me pose a question to you. When the bottom falls out, does God, or the "truth", or "path" give you a few hundred thousand dollars to take care of your financial woes? Does God provide grief counseling? Is God hugging you and holding you at the funeral?

No. So what you have left when the bottom falls out, because instead of trying to mentally and physically prepare for crises you ... prayed really, really hard, is nothing. You have absolutely nothing left, except your hands clasped in worthless prayer.

I guess that's why science flies us to the moon, and religion flies people into buildings. There is nothing higher than science, and what is science? Hard work and critical thought.

Hard work and critical thought has always served me, in any and every problem I've ever dealt with.

  • Ironically, I haven't had any existential crises since I abandoned Christianity, so I don't know. When I encounter a problem, I search for the cause, and determine if it's something I can control. If it is, I do something about it. If not, I accept it and move on.

  • Lol people don't look up to anything superior. They think they do. But never has a deity manifested to them and made them solve their crisis.

When my life comes crashing down I just try to solve sh*t by myself, and if I fail, I just chill because I know that I'm f*cked anyways and can't avoid it.

I'm a really calmed person, and can find comfort in many situations in life,.

  • True strength comes from within. All else is an illusion. Isn't it?

I'm an agnostic, and a mathematical platonist, but I see more harm done in believing in divine intervention than not. Solving your own problems, taking responsibility for your actions, and finding the strength within seems to me to be the key to happiness for anyone whatever their persuasions.

  • I simply resolve the issue by doing what is physically possible to fix it, instead of praying to a magic man in the sky.

  • If my life comes crashing down I shore it up. But my life is not based on the house of cards that is religion

  • Well after the doctor Botched my operation I find peace in believing when the End comes i have enough in me to Kill the Bastard that caused this in the first place

  • Examine what I did, or failed to do, that is causing my personal reaction.

As I've observed, life doesn't ever actually come crashing down. It's all merely my own reaction to surprises.

    I adjust accordingly.

  • I didn't know science teaches a path.

It's a method of learning how things are, not how things ought to be.

  • I have a collection of people called friends and family who I talk to.
