DO I add a comma, or not?

I always grew up to:

apples, oranges, and bananas

My daughter was taught:

apples, oranges and bananas

WHICH one is correct? I was told by a professor SEVERAL years back that the comma was taken out, but there was too much fussing, and they went back to putting the comma IN, but the evidence does not support it.

PLEASE tell me: should the comma be inserted?

  • I was taught like your daughter. I also read a lot and it's written like that too.

  • your daughters are right, you never have a comma if the next word is 'and'
