how much do servers cost?
i am totally new to this. but i am trying to find out the physical equipment i would need to run a website like youtube. not the build or design costs, but the computer, server etc. i would need, what actual equipment would i need in my house to keep it online and able to expand to as large as flickr.com or youtube.com - please help, as much specifics and info as possible would help a lot.

Seeing as YouTube was started by a couple of blokes as a uni project, you actually could host a site like it from home if you chose to, though you'd obviously have to upgrade if it became popular enough.
The cost is the same as any other computer... it depends on the hardware you put in it.
You wouldn't be able to afford running a system like that from your house.
Sites like youtube and flikr have dedicated datacenters to house their servers with multiple high speed pipeline internet connections.
