How do you learn Algebra as an adult?

I was terrible in math in high school and avoided it like the plague. I excelled in other subjects and even did pretty well in Geometry and Business Math when I got a tutor. However, I was never taught Algebra or Calculus. I've recently learned they use it in the trades quite a bit and I'm contemplating learning a trade. Can you recommend a website or a book to learn the basics of Algebra? Thanks!

  • Yes you can. Algebra is like building a house. You start with the foundation. Learn the basics of Algebra. Then you can learn Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. You can even go further and learn Trigonometry, College Algebra, Pre-Calculus and Calculus. Remember when learning Algebra there are rules to follow and formulas to apply. Keep a separate book and write these rules and formulas so that you can go back and revise them. The last thing in learning Algebra and Mathematics in general is that you have to find time to practice, practice, practice and more practice.

  • Go to the library. Look thru all their basic math books. Ones that deal with adding and subtracting, especially negative numbers, and quantities in parentheses.

Find a book you LIKE...one you understand and relate to, and then read it...and do the exercises. When you feel you're ready, go back to the library and get a Pre-Algebra book. Sometimes they're called Intro to Algebra. Find one or two, or three....ones you like and can relate to. Take them home and read....and practice the problems....practice, practice. Use the internet to help you with things you don't understand, or come here and ask us questions. There's a lot of talented folks here that love to help people who really want to learn.

As you go along you will learn...and as you learn you will find good and better resources to help.

You can go pretty far on your own if you work at it.

If the library doesn't have a good selection, you'll have to go to a bookstore and look thru their selection.

  • buy a "math 4 dummies" book

4 = for, just in case you don't understand

  • Get a hot, young tutor. Guarantees your marks will go up in no time
