How to fertilize avocado trees?

I planted avocado trees (the varieties Oro ***** and Haas) a year ago in Sarasota, Florida, and people told me not to fertilize them for roughly the first 6 months. They've been doing fine, but I think I should add some fertilizer now. I own a bag of fertilizer that has 3% nitrogen, 2% phosphate and 7% soluble potash - is this good for avocado trees, or is it better to get something else?

Are there any tips on applying fertilizer to avocado trees - such as watering over the fertilizer, or not watering; or raking it into the peat moss?

Thanks,

  • Avocado trees require a soil pH of 7 or below. You'll need to test your soil's pH before planting your tree, either with a test kit or meter purchased from a nursery or garden center. If you discover that your soil is alkaline, organic matter like sphagnum peat moss will improve soil drainage and acidify soil at the same time. For every 2 1/2 pounds of peat moss you add to 1 square yard of soil, the soil pH will lower by one unit.
