I got ‘hired’ as a personal assistant, is this a scam?

Okay so I got hired as a personal assistant, this person runs a legitimate business (it was on the news locally etc and it’s a real place). I never met this person, and after signing an NDA, they suddenly gave me all this info to login and deal with emails and phone calls to customers.

Doesn’t seem that hard, and I can do everything from home (with regards to dealing with emails and calls - have not had a need to meet in person which I thought was strange). I haven’t had to spend my own money, or login using any of my real info. The sites I was given the login to are accredited sites such as paypal, and business emails etc.

So what is weird to me is.. is this common? And this person is only paying me for maybe 10 hours a week, but the workload seems a lot more than that. It’s true that it’s easy and can be done at home, but it takes a lot of my time up in that I need to watch my email / phone for everything and it’s like it takes up.. 20 mins of my day... every hour or so, instead of it being a solid few hours of my day. I apparently get paid weekly via online, and I just started this week (and it’s only Tuesday...) and I’m already being bombarded by work.

Opinions?

  • My company has a couple of remote employees who do everything that way. The accounting department hired a virtual bookkeeper from Craigslist for one project and he worked out so well, they kept feeding him projects and after 6 months they brought him on full time. He lives and works over 1,000 miles away.

He worked out so well that when we expanded they hired a second virtual assistant for the office...this person lives in (wait for it...)

    freaking..

    HAWAII.

    I am so jealous.

  • it would appear that your job as an assistant is to sift the emails and phone calls, they obviously are changing the referral numbers to your email and phone number you have at home

sounds like a winner if you wanted a home based job

  • I find it odd that you would be a personal assistant without ever meeting the person or even speaking to them. I work remotely but I'm on Skype with my boss at least 3 days a week for about an hour at a time going over everything. Even the interview for the job was done over Skype

  • I'll be surprised if you ever see the money...

  • Do it for a week, keep a log of your hours, and see if you actually get paid. Then decide if you want to continue.

A personal assistant is someone who assists personally, so the whole thing might be a scam. If at some point during the week they need you to pay for something or send money somewhere in some way, that is where the scam is.

  • lol ur doomed
