Is my CMOS dead? M14x?

Today I decided to open up my PC and clean all the dust because the PC was running extremely hot (90'C at idle). I did so and after re-assembling it I booted the PC and I got 5 beeps. I shut the PC down and started it again. This time it booted normally, except when I logged into Windows some programs didn't work and the time was wrong, and the date was 1/1/2011. Initially I thought I had forgotten to plug in the CMOS so I opened the PC again and took out the CMOS for a couple of minutes to reset it. After reassembling the PC I once again got the 5 beeps at startup. Again, I rebooted the PC and it started normally except the date was wrong again. This time I went in BIOS, restored to default settings, booted again and synced my time to the Windows server. So far the PC seems to be running fine. Is there a chance that my CMOS or anything else might have blown?

  • The CMOS battery is what actually keeps the date and time on the correct time. If you remove the battery, then you reset the time.
