Does AVG mess up defrag on Windows Vista?

I'm trying to defrag my laptop and my mom says that anti-virus messes it up cuz on her computer it starts scanning while defragging and makes the defrag start over. Would AVG mess up mine and make it start over? I've never actually defragged this computer before because it takes FOREVER to do and I get tired of waiting. Is it because something is messing it up?

  • Restart it in Safe Mode by pressing F8 as it boots up. Run defrag and then reboot again. This will keep applications from causing defrag to restart over and over. Any application that running can cause to defrag to act that way.

  • ANYTHING running at the same time can cause it to start again if it changes any data on the disk. AVG will generally NOT change data while scanning, unless it finds malware. Better is to set the canning time of AVG in the daytime. Then run defrag (which is always a slow process) at night when you have finished with the machine.
