How does a book get made into a movie?
Is it because it hits the top in the charts or something?
I'm just curious. Thanks!
* Actually.. I'm a young writer, and I'd like to be a director myself and I think it would be amazing to direct a movie that's based on my own book.. my cousins are both directors and my aunt is a publisher so.. it's looking hopeful- but YES, I do understand the difficulties, I'm just super excited! *

The author's literary agency will actively promote the book to film production companies, screenwriters, producers, etc. Or, one of those people will read the book and think it'll make a good movie and will option the rights to the book.
Most books aren't made into movies. The book can be best selling or not; it doesn't matter. What matters is that someone thinks the book will make a good movie and is interested in making the movie. All the books that are made into movies do not have a huge production company behind them. It can easily be a small film company or producer who has trouble getting distribution, so the movie might never appear in theaters and might go straight to DVD. Or, it might do neither and will end up collecting dust as an abandoned project, or it could be a film student's movie. Who knows; it's different for every movie.
After movie producers buy the rights to the book (which if you're doing your own that wouldn't be an issue), screenwriters rewrite the book into a screenplay to make it work for a movie, and then the director, actors, everyone involved makes the movie off of the screenplay.
Have fun with that. You're lucky to have so many talented people in your family.
