Memory card read issue?

I bought my wife a 16GB Sony branded Memory stick pro duo not too far back and out of nowhere the camera or computer won't read the card anymore. When I try to take a picture or transfer anything it just says "reinsert the memory stick" on the screen. It's never done this with any other memory cards before. It's not an SDHC card either. If anyone knows why it's doing that, I'd love to know because that card obviously wasn't cheap. Her camera is a Sony Cybershot model DSC-W300 if that helps. Thanks

Update:

So it appears I may have to try formatting...is there any way to save what's on it now?

  • Well sir the camera model doesn't make a lot of difference.

First, have you tried formatting the card in the camera? If not see if it will let you do that.

Barring that, I know it wasn't cheap, it may be fried. These little devices fail often. One of he biggest causes of failure is using the card and camera as a display device... shouldn't do that because (don't ask) constantly calling up data from these things can cause failure. Also, never delete photos or format a card in your computer (again don't ask) they don't like that and could also fail.

Have you got another card to try? If that one works I'd say your 16 is done. Now, given all of the above that's why I only buy 2 and 4gb cards. They're cheaper and if they fail it's not a big $$ issue.

I shot a major event not long ago, 500 or so shots. Uploaded, backed up, put the card back in the camera and bingo! Just like that - toast. Sorry.

  • Right SD and micro SD will have to all paintings pleasant (offering you have got the mSD adapter). However a few card readers are a bit of fussy with SDHCs, I've had no less than two instances while the pc simply did not realise an SDHC card, to my massive inflammation.

  • Below are some links to websites that have recovery software to try and save files from cards and hard drives. Check out these options and see if any can be of assistance.

    Hope this helps.
