At least Felix the Cat had stuff like videogames and movies still happening within the last decade or two. I wouldn't be so sure that the trademarked characters you're talking about are truly public domain, especially for commercial purposes like you desire. The original cartoons themselves from decades ago are likely public domain now...the trademarked names and characters are a different story... and there's been new copyrighted material that makes use of them.
